I received [a] bill from the doctor, who only saw me for 5 minutes. It was more than $2,000…

At the time I was in the hospital, I had Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance. It was on a Friday afternoon, and I was having vaginal bleeding and intense pain. Because of the time, I couldn’t go to my own doctor, so I went to the ER.

They did a pregnancy test, and it came back positive. They recommended I stay there under observation for an hour. I asked them what it would cost, and they said they couldn’t tell me until I had left the hospital. The services I received were a pregnancy test, an ultrasound, a bag of IV fluid and a couple of Tylenol.

I received separate bills: one for the ultrasound, one for the lab work, one for the ER, one bill from the doctor, who only saw me for 5 minutes. It was more than $2,000, and they sent me to collections because I still had $500 left to pay. By the way, the bills were more than $10,000, and my insurance covered $8,000.

I had a credit card for emergencies, but my credit limit was reduced because they sent me to collections. Because I had lost the baby, it couldn’t be on Medicaid to help with the debt.
