My opportunities would be limited by any government interference that attempted to make me an employee rather than an independent contractor.

I turned to self employment after being laid off over 20 years ago. I serve companies that can’t afford and do not need a full-time person in my position. It is a market that would be devastated by requirements to hire.

Even if I find part-time employment with multiple companies, my opportunities would be limited by any government interference that attempted to make me an employee rather than an independent contractor. I once took a 40 hr/wk opportunity, but I only accepted it because I could maintain my independent status.

This gave me the flexibility to continue to service my other clients, which in turn saved me from financial ruin when that business hit a cyclical downturn. I was originally cut to 30 hours, then 20, and I voluntarily left when they no longer had even those hours required.
