“As a rule, IC court reporters are not salaried employees. We get paid for the jobs we cover. No jobs, no pay. It’s like being paid a commission. As a freelance reporter, I rove between different court reporting firms according to their needs. This is how many court reporters work. When one firm is slow, I pick up work from another firm. If I am forced – by this law – to become an employee, how do I earn money when the firm doesn’t have a job for me to cover? How I choose to work should be my choice and not a government mandate.”
